*** Email from Big Joe Bataan fan ***
I am a 23 year old college student from Huston, TX and was raised with Bolero music my father
listen to when I was a young boy. He is from El Salvador and would listen to everything from Daniel
Santos to Benny More, Julio Jaramillo to the Billos Caracas Boys. I came across you Joe not to
long ago while searching for more Latin Jazz. My god, now could I have come across you so late.
I instantly fell in love " Young gifted Brown" "Under th street lamp" "Mastizo" and the list goes on.
You truly captured the Latin sound with your music and I have gotten hooked. I just wanted to let
Mr. Joe Bataan know, that I will forever have this music. I hope you still have a lot left in you.
Mr. Bataan, thank you for the Latin sound. God has truly blessed you.
Sincerely, Mario (Huston, TX) Jan.27.2009
1974 San Francisco gig band member
I found his one hazy photo which I scanned. It's our rehearsal for
the 1974 gig in San Francisco. Joe Bataan is standing in front of
the stage facing the band. I'm the trombone player furthest to the
right. The keyboard player(White t-shirt on the left facing back)
was Phil Roa. Last I heard he was teaching music. The tenor sax
player is Jim Urkel. I saw him couple years back. He is a very in
demand woodwind studio player, Dwight Carroll and the Drummer
John Martinez Jr. Don't remember the rest of the band.
The thing I remember about the gig is Joe's fans.. They went wild
which startled us for a moment but by the end of the first song
we were in to it. In 1975 I stopped playing gigs. I went back to playing for several years with a band
in LA called the Sedillo Brothers. I play trombone, harmonica, congas, bongos and wrote and
arranged all the horn charts for the Sedillo Brothers.
Now, besides my full time job I write music. Charles in LA
I have grown up on Joe Bataan's music and was always partial to the "Original" sounds of My
Cloud, Ordinary Guy, What good is a Castle, etc. Hearing those songs always reminded me of
growing up in the Housing Projects on the Lower East Side, spraying fire hydrants, waiting for the
jazz-mobile to come into my neighborhood on hot summer nights, all good memories and at some
level Joe Bataan was part of that through his music. I know it sounds corny but it is true.
Back in 2001 my wife asked me if I wanted to see Joe Bataan "up on 110th Street" for her birthday,
Hell Yeah I wanted to see Joe Bataan. It was GREAT, it was as if Joe was singing just for my wife &
I. Although I can't sing " A Lick" there I was up front and center singing along with Joe Bataan.
After performing Joe came out to speak to the audience and I brought a particular photo of him
from his album Afro-Philipino- (one of my favorites) and he autographed if for me. My wife and I
spoke with Joe for a while and not only could he sing he was a really nice guy. That was one night
which I will treasure always, the night I met Joe Bataan.

Mr. New York is back! "Ordinary Guy" "Gypsy Woman" "What Good Is A Castle" "Under the Street Lamp" "La Botella" are just some of his many hits! After a gap of 20 years, Bataan is back with an album recorded in New York, on which time seems to have stood still. We're back in 1969 ! Peace, Friendship, Solidarity
